Announcing the 2007 Spring Grant Awards!

1. "Why Are the Dolphin Babies Dying? Could It Be a Lack of Genetic Diversity? A Research Study in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics for AP Biology and Genetics Students at Zionsville Community High School"; Barb Burkhardt and Dan Layton, ZCHS; $898.00 Funding will provide laboratory materials to help determine why newborn dolphins recently died at the Indianapolis Zoo.  This project is a collaboration between the ZCHS AP Biology and Genetics students, the Indianapolis Zoo and the University of Indianapolis.

2. "Empowering Students with Radar"; Andy Seward, ZMS; $0 (grant request fulfilled by equipment gift from ZCHS)  Equipment gift from ZCHS of 2 radar guns to allow 6th grade science students to collect authentic and quantitative speed and acceleration data.

3. "Cleaning Our School Courtyard and Creating New Garden Space Using Mathematical Reasoning and Life Skills"; Greg Knollman, Elizabeth Ridgeway, Jennifer Davis, and Susan Parker, ZCHS; $1,091.82  Funding will allow students in the Student Transition and Employment Partnership  Program to use math concepts to enhance garden space in the ZCHS Foreign Languages Courtyard.

4. "Centered on Math"; Carmen Marshall, Eagle, $1,174.36  Funding will provide math manipulatives, games and activities for 2nd grade students.

5. "Hands on Habitat"; Elena Baez, Union; $2,100.00  Funding will provide essential items, including teacher materials and general garden tools and plants, for an outdoor wildlife habitat at the newly constructed Union Elementary.

6. "Math at Their Fingertips"; Chris Anzeveno, PVLE; $955.80  Funding will provide for “TouchMath,” a supplemental math program for 1st grade students.

7. "Fast ForWard: Success in the Classroom"; Kathy Roy, Union; $5,000.00  Funding will allow the ZCS to pilot an Internet and CD-Rom based reading intervention program for children ages 5-12 years old at Union Elementary.

8. "Bridging the Gap Between English as Second Language Students and Native English Speakers in ZCS"; Robbin Edwards, Stonegate; $3,800.00  Funding will provide Zip Zoom English, a web based reading program for English as a Second Language Students in the ZCS.

9. "The Great Wall of Networking"; Andy Gall, ZCHS; $900.00  Funding will provide materials for  ZCHS students to construct a 6’ high by 8’ wide portable computer networking wall.

10."Cooking with Betty"; Rhonda Munz and Kathryn Delp, Stonegate; $511.96  Funding will allow a retired teacher to make monthly visits to two second grade classrooms for a literature based cooking class.

11. "Rosetta Stone® Workstation"; Katie Graham, ZCHS; $525.95  Funding will provide for the Rosetta Stone Spanish immersion software program.

12. "Freshman Mentorship Program"; Gil Speer, ZCHS; $3,600.00  Funding will provide materials for the new Freshman Mentorship Program at ZCHS based on Sean Covey’s book,  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

13. "Zionsville West Middle School Parenting Lending Library"; Julie Breuninger and Connie Schlegel, ZWMS; $750.00.  Funding will supply books to a newly created Parenting Lending Library at ZWMS.

14. "Dukane Projector System: Be Transported to Another Country"; Laura Haehl, ZCHS; $2,420.00  Funding will provide a permanent Dukane Projector;  this projector will enhance multimedia presentations by and for Spanish students at ZCHS.

15. "Stonegate Elementary Visual Timers"; Libby Johnson, Stonegate; $559.80.  Funding will provide 20 timers for 20 classrooms at Stonegate Elementary;  these timers will provide a visual display of elapsed time to aid students with time management.

16. "Dukane Projection System for U.S. Government"; Denise Ostendorf, ZCHS; $2,420.00.  Funding will provide a permanent Dukane Projector for US History students at ZCHS;  this projector will aid in multimedia presentations and maximize instructor efficiency.

17. "Dukane Projection System for AP European History, World History Interdisciplinary, and Current Events"; Shane Caldwell, ZCHS; $2,420.00  Funding will provide a permanent Dukane Projector for AP European History, World History Interdisciplinary and Current Events students at ZCHS.
