The Eagle Elementary Kindergarten team of Joey Hewett, Callie Surface, Jennifer Sautbine and Joy Morris received a Spring Classroom Grant for their project “Building Blocks of Learning.” ZEF helped fund building blocks and light tables in these kindergarten classrooms that help with a cohesive learning and teaching process. One interactive way students have enjoyed the materials from this grant is that they rebuild scenes from the books they read and act them out, combining the blocks with dramatic play.
Mrs. Hewett said, “Our light tables have been such powerful additions to the classrooms, allowing children to play and explore the ideas of light, reflection, and color. We have offered provocations such as mixing water and concentrated colors to see what happens as colors meet and mix. We have also used the light tables as a tool for drawing.”
“The work of ZEF matters because Zionsville’s mission is to provide a customized learning experience that prepares students for productive citizenship in the 21st century. When students have materials that support them to think critically, explore big ideas, and connect, empathize, and engage with others, they are living into the mission that ZCS has set forth. We are so grateful to ZEF and the work they do each day and the community who helps make our big dreams possible.” - Mrs. Joey Hewett, Kindergarten Teacher
We love seeing this ZEF Grant in Action come to life at Eagle Elementary and look forward to showing you more in ’26 around grants at other schools across the district.
