What We Do

In September 1995, a group of forward-thinking Zionsville community members formed a non-profit foundation with a mission “to serve its school community by providing funds that promote academic excellence.” In the 20 years since its inception, the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) has awarded over $1,000,000 in classroom, professional development, and student enrichment grants. ZEF depends on corporate sponsorships, individual donations, and support from community merchants to help support its mission to fund innovation in education in all Zionsville Community Schools.
Zionsville Community Schools are currently some of the lowest funded public schools per student in Indiana. The funds raised by ZEF are used to help bridge the gap between the basic curricular necessities provided by the state funds and the innovative ideas our educators develop to encourage our students to think out of the box and develop into life-long thinkers.

ZEF is a separate financial and legal entity from the Zionsville Community Schools and its Board of Education. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who, through careful financial investments and meticulous stewardship of corporate and community donations, maintains the founding supporters’ original mission: to use the money raised and invested to fund classroom, professional development, and student enrichment grants.
Since its inception, the ZEF Board has stringently maintained its focus on funding educational innovation at every level in every Zionsville Community School through its Grants for Education. ZEF has proudly funded grants that have enriched the music, art, physical education, STEM, and literacy curriculum at every school level. Grants have included significant investment in the 1:1 laptop programs at the high school and middle school, purchase of equipment to develop a student-run video production studio, purchase of materials to support a school-wide literature study, and financial support for artists-in-residence.
Each year, ZCS educators are awarded “Imagine” Professional Development Grants to promote professional growth and renewal opportunities for experienced educators.
ZEF also supports students involved in extra-curricular activities through Student Enrichment Grants. These grants are awarded to school-sanctioned academic, philanthropic, or student government teams and clubs to support higher levels of competition, further education in their field of activity, or special projects.
Thanks to a grant from Community Foundation of Boone County, ZEF also provides matching grants for Donors Choose projects. ZEF’s program matches grants submitted by ZCS teachers and staff valued up to $500. Once private donors have funded a Donors Choose grant half-way, ZEF matches the donation.
Support for our grant initiatives is provided by individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and fundraising events such as the annual Barn Bash. For more information on corporate sponsorship or community merchant support, please contact:
